This week both the New York Times and Quartz made their email newsletters subscriber only. That means their newsletters are now one of the incentives to become a paid subscriber. Does an email newsletter work as an added benefit to an existing subscriber? Many use their newsletters to funnel readers to subscription but they're flipping this around. It'll be interesting to see how successful it is and if others follow.
